More Than Just a Step Up
Anyone who has driven a lifted ute or 4×4 wagon knows how awkward it can be getting in and out without a side step. It might not seem like a big deal on your first drive, but after a full day on the tools, climbing in and out of a high cabin dozens of times wears you down. The constant strain on your knees, hips and back adds up, and if you are already tired from a long shift, that awkward step up is the last thing you want to deal with. For passengers, kids or anyone carrying gear, easy entry and exit becomes even more important. A solid set of side steps turns that climb into a simple, comfortable step and reduces the physical stress of daily use.
But side steps do more than provide ease of access. When paired with brush bars, they also protect the lower body panels, door sills and doors from the kind of side damage that builds up over time. If you are driving through scrub, navigating narrow bush tracks where rocks and debris kick up from the road, squeezing past obstacles on a work site or dealing with tight car park spaces, brush bars act as a buffer between the terrain and your vehicle’s panels. Without that protection, the areas below the doors pick up scratches, dents and stone chips that eventually lead to rust and costly repairs.
For tradies and off road drivers who put their vehicles through hard use, the combination of a practical step and side panel protection makes this one of the more worthwhile upgrades you can do. It is the kind of accessory you stop noticing after a while because it just works, but you would definitely mind going without it.
Side Steps, Brush Bars and What Else Is in the Range
This category covers a few different product types, so it helps to understand what each one does before you choose.
Side steps with brush bars are the most common option in our range and the most popular choice for ute and 4×4 owners who want both convenience and protection in one setup. These combine a flat or textured stepping platform with a tubular bar that runs along the underside of the cab, shielding the lower panels and doors from damage. You get easy entry and exit plus brush bar protection as a set. We stock these for popular models like the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger PX, Isuzu D-MAX, Mitsubishi Triton, Mazda BT-50, Nissan Navara D22, Nissan Patrol GU and Toyota LandCruiser 100 Series.
Standalone side steps are designed purely for cabin access without the added brush bar. Sometimes called running boards, these are a clean option for vehicles where side protection is less of a priority or where the body style does not suit a full brush bar. We currently stock these for the Toyota LandCruiser 79 Series (both single cab and dual cab), the Kia Tasman and the Nissan Patrol GU. If your vehicle spends most of its time on sealed roads and you just want a handy step, these are a great fit.
You might also come across powered running boards that automatically extend when you open the door and retract when it is closed. Those are a different product category altogether. Everything in our range is fixed, bolt-on steel construction, which means fewer moving parts, less to go wrong, and a setup that handles rough conditions without issues.
Side rail cover trim guards are a slightly different product. Rather than a step or bar, these are moulded covers that fit over the exposed side rails on vehicles like the Nissan Navara NP300. They protect the rail area from scratches, UV damage and general wear while giving the side of the vehicle a cleaner appearance. If you are after broader body protection, our mud flaps and guards range is also worth a look.
For anyone considering even heavier side protection for serious off road use, rock sliders are another option worth researching. They sit lower and are built to take direct hits from rocks and obstacles on challenging tracks. Our range focuses on side steps and brush bars, but it is good to know the difference when you are planning your build.
Vehicles We Cover
One of the strengths of this range is how far back the coverage goes. Whether you are running a brand new ute or keeping an older 4×4 on the road, there is likely something here for you.
On the ute side, we stock side steps and brush bars for the Toyota Hilux across both the N70 (2005-2015) and N80 (2015-2024) generations, the Ford Ranger PX dual cab (2011 onwards), the Isuzu D-MAX (2007-2011), the Mitsubishi Triton ML and MN (2006-2014), the Mazda BT-50 (2006-2011), and the Nissan Navara D22 (1997-2015). The Kia Tasman (2025-2026) is also in the range with a heavy duty off road side step for owners who want to kit out their new ute from day one.
For 4×4 wagons and tourers, the Toyota LandCruiser is well covered. We have side steps for the 79 Series in both single cab and dual cab configurations (2007 onwards), plus side steps with brush bars for the LandCruiser 100 Series (1998-2007). The Nissan Patrol GU is also covered with both heavy duty standalone steps (1998-2003) and side steps with brush bars (2005-2016).
The Navara NP300 (2014-2022) has side rail cover trim guards available across two year range splits, which is a popular upgrade for owners who want to tidy up and protect the exposed rails on their tray.
Choosing the Right Fit
The biggest thing to get right when ordering side steps or brush bars is matching the product to your exact vehicle. Cab style matters, as a dual cab side step will not fit a single cab, and year ranges can vary even within the same model generation. Always check the product page before adding to cart to make sure the year range and cab configuration match your vehicle.
If you are wondering how much weight the steps can handle, our steel side steps are built to take the load of a full-sized adult stepping up and down repeatedly throughout the day. They are designed for daily use on work vehicles, not just the occasional step up on the weekend.
All side steps and brush bars in our range are constructed from steel and designed for a direct bolt-on fit using factory mounting points. Installation is straightforward with most products and does not require drilling or cutting, which keeps things simple whether you prefer to install it yourself or have a local workshop take care of it.
Everything ships Australia-wide, with free delivery to major metro postcodes. If you are not sure which option suits your vehicle, get in touch with our team and we will help you find the right fit.
